The fashion world has its fair share of issues. From cheap labor and sweatshops to deforestation and animal cruelty, so many big brands are brushing these issues under the rug and I am not here for it. So yes, the argument is to buy small and shop local. But as we all know, that doesn’t come cheap. While certain big brands like H&M are working to “detox” its production, there is still a long way to go. Luckily, there are a handful of activists out there stomping for a better industry. Christy Dawn
We love Christy Dawn’s transparency. Her brand uses “deadstock” product, the residual fabrics left behind from major fashion houses, to create her beautiful dresses. It pays a premium wage for all its seamstresses in LA, and offers healthcare benefits. Christy Dawn recently launched a new social media campaign introducing the dressmakers behind the clothing, and we love her commitment to transparency in the industry.
Bethann Hardison
As a former model, Bethann Hardison has worked basically every job in the fashion district. Now coined as a “Mother of Models,” Bethann spends her time as a fashion activist and documentarian. She has been a powerful voice of calling for more diversity in the fashion industry and established the Black Girls Coalition and Diversity Coalition, which were formed to help give a voice and a community to minorities in the fashion industry.
Nora Milena Vehling
Blogger and freelance sustainability consultant, Nora Milena Vehling, is a member of the Fashion Revolution Germany and digs deep into labels and and brands in the fashion industry. We love her “rumors and reality” exposés. The blog isn’t as active as it once was, but she’s still consulting and helping brands detox their footprint.
Kalpona Akter
As a former child worker in the fashion industry, Akter began working in garment factories in Bangladesh at age 12. Now she serves as the founder and executive director of Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity. She’s a champion for fair wages, safety regulations and the fight against exploitation of garment workers.
