Pinterest sure makes decorating a home seem easy, doesn’t it? But sometimes translating those visions is easier said than done. If you’re looking to incorporate a certain color palette or just create more cohesion into your home décor, read on.

Tip #1: Create a mood board.

Start on Pinterest. Create a board just for inspiration. It doesn’t even necessarily have to be all interior shots. It can be any image that speaks to you artistically. Add as many as you can for a wide overview.

Tip #2: Pull out the common themes.

Are you leaning toward warmer tones or cooler tones? Is there a dominant color among the images? If there is, that’s a good base. Ideally, if you’re decorating within a certain color palette, you want to have one dominant color and three to four accent colors. Look at your mood board and pull out the most common colors you were drawn to.

Tip #3: Use the 60-30-10 rule.

A good rule of thumb is to use 60 percent of a dominant color, 30 percent of a secondary color and 10 percent of an accent color. This will ensure there’s just enough balance in the palette with just enough pop of interest.

Tip #4: When in doubt, go with soft tones.

Petal pinks can be a bright pick-me-up and surprisingly livable, whereas bubblegum pink can make it feel too “childlike.” Stick with soft tones instead of stark, contrasting colors. Warmer shades will help the space feel more inviting, especially in living areas.
