Why “Man Repeller” Fashion Is A Great Idea

“Man Repeller is amorphous. It can mean whatever you need it to mean: maybe it’s a shoulder to cry on, a caffeine jolt on a lazy day. Maybe it’s a blog that curiously makes baseball caps….” – Leandra Medine

Ever heard of man repeller fashion? No worries! Our contributor, Kaleigh Glaza, is here to tell you about it and why she believes it’s a great idea.

If you haven’t heard of Man Repeller, or visited the site, you might be a little confused by the idea behind this post. But chances are, you’ve been affected by influencer/writer/fashion icon/front row girl Leandra Medine whether you’ve visited her site or not. Since she launched her blog in 2010, she has focused on fashion that makes us feel good. That started with “man repeller” fashion, which was essentially a focus on “trends that women love, and men hate.” From harem pants to sweater vests to grandpa sneakers, she and her team covered and tried it all over the years!

As those years, and fun street style fashions, have gone on, the term “man repeller” has come to mean more than just a style. It evokes an irreverence and fun that can only come from true love of fashion and curiosity about the world…pre-conceived notions be damned. It has grown in influence as women the world over have embraced one simple idea: I shall wear exactly what I want, thank you very much.

Do you feel best in a bandage dress and high heels? Wear that! Do you like rocking Dr. Martens and a baseball hat, but with a sparkly tee? Put it on! Are you here for patterns on patterns on patterns, all in the brightest of colors? Rock on, rockstar!

The point is: don’t worry about trends or what other people say you should wear. Feel good, and you’ll look good…no matter what’s on your body.

In a world of Facetuned Instagram photos and airbrushed magazine photo shoots, it’s time to take back the confidence in being exactly who you are, no matter who that is. And the quickest way to do that is with your style.

If you’ve recently “Marie Kando’ed” your closet (or heard your friends talking about it), you’ll know that she focuses on only keeping items in your life that spark joy.

Take that a step further as you look through your closet tonight. What items spark joy? What do those items say about you? How often do you actually wear them? Because those items that spark joy; those should be on heavy rotation in your life. Even if they’re the baggiest, hole-iest, oldest pair of boyfriend jeans.

Sure, man repeller style might not be what’s considered “sexy” or at the height of fashion, but that’s OK! You don’t have to be either of those things to be who you are. Find joy in your clothes, and I bet you’ll find more joy in your day-to-day life. Because who can be in a bad mood when they’re wearing their favorite clothes?

Love your clothes. Love yourself. And if that repels men or anyone else…so be it. You do you. And do it with a big ol’ smile on your beautiful face.
