Illustrator Poppy Almond Is Creating The Playful, Colorful Art The World Needs RN

Poppy Almond makes art that makes you smile. Maybe it’s the cheerful combination of colors she always uses, or her penchant for flowers with smiley faces or adorable sushi, but everything Poppy creates is pure fun. We got a chance to pick her brain about her creative inspiration, books she is reading and what’s currently at the top of her wish list. Let’s get into the interview!

Name: Poppy Almond

Occupation: Illustrator and Content Creator

Currently residing in: Leeds, UK

IG handle: @poppyalmond

Can you start by telling us a bit about yourself?

Hello, My name is Poppy Almond and I am an illustrator and content creator based in Leeds.

We absolutely love your design style, can you tell us about that process? How did you land on it?

I studied printed textiles at university where I began developing my own style. Since becoming freelance almost two years ago, I have really refined my own style and mainly create work I love myself.

Do you have any favorite past projects that stick out?

A fairly recent project that I was so excited to work on was a collaboration with Lucy & Yak. Although it’s not something I have a lot of experience in, I love the idea of my prints on clothes that people can wear to express themselves or to feel happy. Lucy & Yak is a company that I have admired for many years, not only for its designs but also its sustainable way of working.

Who is your dream collab/project with?

I would love to design a home/interiors range! My dream collab would probably be with a store such as Habitat or West Elm to create some colorful and cool homewares!

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Definitely a morning person.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

Make myself coffee and water my plants.

What do you always keep in your fridge?

Olives and sriracha sauce.

How would you describe your personal style? Do you have a specific uniform or look that you stick with?

Playful, colorful and fun with elements of classic and effortless pieces.

What are the top 3 items in your closet that you cherish?

I have a bomber jacket that was my brothers that I use to borrow all the time.

My green Rixo dress: it’s still my favorite piece I own and I don’t get the chance to wear it all that much.

My Lavest shirt: it was a piece that I fell straight in love with as soon as I saw it. My mum got it for me as a birthday gift and I think I’ll always cherish it.

Can you tell us about your home? What do you love about your space?

I just rent a little flat in Leeds with my boyfriend. All the walls are painted white so we can have lots of fun with the color of pieces in it. It’s my happy place and where I spent most of my time. I love filling the walls with art and the shelves with weird objects.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

An introvert.

Do you like to read? What are some of your all-time favorite books?

Yes! I am currently reading Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo and really enjoying it. I’ve recently read Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge and think it’s a book everyone should read. I love Sally Rooney. Both of her books, Normal People and Conversations With Friends, are my favorite.

Current beauty routine? What products do you always repurchase?

I always rebuy Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser. It’s so soft and gentle but does exactly what it needs to. I also love Caudalie Gentle Buffing Cream. I swear by this product and try to recommend it to everyone!

What are 5 items on your wish list?

A Prada bag—it’s so classic and would be an investment piece I would get so much use from. Some Holiday the Label jeans, you can’t go wrong with a good pair of trousers. A full-length Ettore Sottsass mirror. A Helmstedt dress and some Nicole Saldaña shoes.

Where do you find creative inspiration when you’re feeling burn out creeping in?

I try to take a break, head to a coffee shop or the park with my sketchbook and just start drawing whatever comes to mind.

Who are some of your favorite artists to follow on IG?

Some of my favorites include Tess Smith-Roberts, Katie Gillies and Bodil Jane.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

I have some new products launching in my shop very soon that I’m very excited about!

Favorite quote?

“You didn’t come this far to only come this far.”

Thanks, Poppy! Follow along with her on IG at @poppyalmond and @popplyalmonddesign
