Taylor Kitto’s Vintage-Inspired Pacific Northwest Haven

Taylor Kitto

Taylor Kitto owns the e-commerce company, Wild Poppy Goods, selling beautiful (sometimes vintage!) goods, so it should come as no surprise that her home in the Pacific Northwest is full of beautiful new and vintage items. We love everything about her earthy and cozy space—from the original built-ins in the dining room and the amazing natural light that comes into the space to all of the personal and unique items throughout. We invite you to take a look at Taylor’s home and learn more about her below.

How would you describe your home’s style?

Inviting, cozy, earthy and personal. I’m a big believer that beautiful can be functional.

You’re originally from California! Has your style changed since moving to Portland?

We moved here about 4 years ago from the Central Coast, and I would say that my style has become very reflective of whatever season I’m in, particularly when it comes to our home. Back in California, we didn’t really get pronounced seasons like we do in Portland, so each year, it’s an exciting opportunity to create a space that complements what’s happening around me. In the summer, I bring in fresh flowers and keep the doors wide open, and in the fall/winter, I love bringing in greenery, darker colors and cozy textures. I’ve also come to understand the Danish concept of hygge on a new level now. It’s dark and rainy for a better part of the year here in the PNW, so cozy blankets, candles and warm lighting are a necessity to make it through the winter months!

What is a favorite element in your home?

Everything in our home has been thoughtfully selected and tells a unique story. From pottery I’ve brought back from Mexico and knives we found at a market in France to textiles that were found in Turkey. It’s nice to be surrounded by objects that remind me of a certain time or experience.

Do you have a favorite room? Why do you love it?

Definitely the dining room! It’s the most open room and is at the heart of the house’s layout. I love the original built-ins and the amazing afternoon light that comes through the window. It’s just a nice place to be in. Nothing beats putting on a record, lighting a few candles and having dinner together at the end of the day.

What inspired you to start Wild Poppy Goods?

I began Wild Poppy Goods in 2015 when I first moved up to Portland. I started off by just selling curated vintage clothing and homewares, but over the years it has evolved into a store focusing on independent designers and makers. Of course, there will always be a few vintage pieces thrown in still!

Everything in your shop is amazing! How do you curate your shop while working with so many different artists and designers?

I only sell what I personally love, which keeps things simple. I am very mindful of what I want to promote and put out into the world, so I keep sustainability and intentional products as the main focus.

What are some of your favorite home décor resources?

I’m a big fan of Pinterest and can spend hours browsing for cool homes. I also love going on Chairish to find unique vintage pieces.

If you could change anything about your home, what would it be?

We could definitely could use an extra bathroom! We have one (and a tiny one at that!), and it gets challenging when guests stay over.

How do you start your day?

My fiancé and I get up around 7ish to spend some time together before he heads out to work. We make coffee while we have half-awake conversations, and around 8 a.m. or so I get my act together and take our dogs out for a walk. I always use this time to listen to my favorite podcasts, which is a really grounding way to begin the day.

Do you drink coffee or tea in the morning? And how do you take it?

Right now, it’s an Americano with a splash of almond milk and a pinch of coconut sugar. I also drink endless cups of tea during the day! I’m big into beverages.

Who are your favorite people to follow on Instagram right now and why?

@paigegeffen – Paige explores the themes of objects and their influence in our lives. Her writing and aesthetic are beautiful and she’s just a radiant human!

@houseinhabit – She and her husband are in the middle of renovating a new home, which is a fun process to watch. She has great interior design style and always keeps it real.

@beatricevalenzuela – I love getting glimpses of her eclectic and gorgeous LA home. She just exemplifies California cool.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Portland?

There’s so much to love about Portland—the food, the people, and of course, the nature. One of my favorite things is how walkable this city is. From our home, we can walk to the best restaurants, parks, bakeries, farmers’ markets, etc. An added bonus of walking in this city is checking out all the cute, historic homes. We’ve got some charmers here!

What’s your secret to keeping your home looking so bright and tidy?

I only bring what I love and truly need into my home. I used to have a lot more clutter and knick-knacks, and over time have sold or donated over half of what I used to own. Once you spend the time to do that, you are definitely more particular of what you bring in! Everything has a place and if it doesn’t…it usually just ends up in the basement.
