A Spring Farmers’ Market Shopping List

Springtime is undoubtedly one of the best times at the local farmers’ market. Spring produce is fresh and plentiful, and there’s often an abundance to choose from. The farmers’ market is one of my favorite places in the world, and going each week has taught me the ins-and-outs of a successful shopping trip that not only benefits your kitchen, but your community as well.

Tips for the Farmers’ Market:

  • Bring your own bags: Don’t rely on vendors to supply you with bags for your purchases. If you’re bringing your kids, consider bringing a wagon to help transport both your tiny humans and your farmers’ market finds.
  • Go in the morning: By mid-day, the farmers’ market can be pretty picked over. If you want to get the best stuff, head out early. However, if you have a small shopping list and are more concerned about budget, you can often get better deals at the end of the day when vendors are trying to get rid of their last products.
  • Plan your meals: Mapping out your meals for the week before you go to the farmers’ market will help you zero in on what you really need and avoid unnecessary purchases. There’s nothing worse than throwing out that beautiful produce because you didn’t use it in time.
  • Talk to the farmers: Found something new you are curious about? Ask the farmers what to do with it! They often have great tips for how to prepare it and recipes you might not have thought of before. Plus, getting to know your local farmer is a great way to build community.
  • Know what is in season: The beauty of the farmers’ market is taking advantage of all the seasonal goodness it has to offer. Don’t buy winter produce in spring, or jump the gun on those late-summer fruits. You will end of paying more and not getting your money’s worth in terms of taste.
