7 Things To Give Mom That Don’t Cost A Thing

Mother’s Day is May 9, which will be here before you know it. If holidays tend to sneak up on you, or you’re limited on funds this year, these free Mother’s Day gift ideas are a great way to show mom you care. The more thoughtful and intentional you are with your gift-giving, the more loved she will feel, so don’t be afraid to get creative, and maybe even a little mushy.

Mother's Day gift ideas

Breakfast in bed

Not just any breakfast in bed, either. Let her make the decisions. Plan ahead and take her order so she can truly be pampered. Give her a few different recipe options or let her make a special request. Just make sure to clean up and leave everything the way you found it so she can get the complete experience.

Some breakfast in bed recipe ideas:

Write a letter

My mom is a total sentimentalist, so I know sitting down and writing her a heartfelt letter would mean more than any gift I could buy for her. Include your favorite things about her, what she means to you, and some of your favorite memories. You could even make it a yearly tradition that she will be sure to treasure.

Plan a movie night

Is your mom a sucker for romantic comedies? Or maybe she’s actually a fan of cinematic thrillers? Pick a handful of her favorite movies (or give her a list and let her choose!) and plan a cozy movie night at home. Set up some string lights, grab all the blankets and hunker down. Don’t forget to pop some popcorn, open a bottle of her favorite wine and sneak something sweet in there as well.

Make her a playlist

This is a fun chance to get creative. Put together a playlist that not only has her favorite songs but songs that hold special memories. Is there a song that reminds her of a fun time in her life? What song did she dance to at her wedding? Take it up a notch by using an app like Canva to create an “album cover” specifically for her.

Give her a manicure

It’s easy to give mom a pampering at-home manicure with the right tools. You can even make your own sugar scrub out of household items. Set it up as a whole experience: Put on some “spa” music, pick a sunny spot, and make sure she has something refreshing to drink.

Picnic

A lot of moms truly just want the gift of quality time. What better way to do that than with a picnic in a scenic spot? Whether you head to the beach or the park, grab a blanket and a basket of her favorite foods and enjoy the sunshine. Put together a charcuterie spread or recreate the sandwiches from her favorite local deli. All you need is some tasty nibbles and the gift of time.

Nature walk

This gift is actually a two-parter. Schedule a day with mom a week or two before Mother’s Day to go on a nature walk. Make sure to head somewhere with pretty foliage and plenty of wildflowers. Collect treasures along the way like daisies, cool leaves, etc. She won’t think anything of it until Mother’s Day when you present her with a handmade memento from your walk. Put your collected finds in a shadowbox or pressed in a picture frame. She’ll be so touched by the duality and thoughtfulness of the gift.
