Time is so strange. Despite the fact that we’ve essentially been stuck inside for most of this year, it’s flying by faster than ever. It feels like the months are over in a blink. It’s really bizarre. Since time feels odd and disorienting, I’ve hardly considered things that I’m loving this month. Don’t fret though, I somehow always find things I’m oohing and ahhing over. This month, most of my favorites are books (but when are they not?).
- Chinatown Pretty by Valerie Luu and Andria Lo: This book is an utter delight. Bay Area locals, Valerie and Andria, photographed extremely stylish seniors across six different Chinatowns. The stories and outfits are lovely and inspiring.
- Mille ‘Lola’ Dress: I have no reason to wear a shiny gold dress this year, but maybe that is the reason I need to wear a shiny gold dress this year! This one is gorgeous.
- The Dark Dark: Stories by Samantha Hunt: Samantha Hunt is my favorite contemporary author. I mentioned her book The Seas a lot on Glitter Guide in the past few months. That book floored me. This is a collection of strange, beautiful stories that will leave you perplexed but smiling.
- In the Half Room by Carson Ellis: In our most recent book newsletter, I started a section dedicated to my recommendations for kids’ books. As a parent, you’re responsible for the stories and art that are first introduced to your children. It’s an important role, and one I take very seriously. I love reading picture books with my kids —especially ones that are strange, fun, and provoke them to ask questions or to create their own stories. Carson Ellis is an author and illustrator who makes those types of books. This is her newest book. It’s so wonderfully strange.
- Baggu bags: Baggu reusable bags are the best. I love their prints and patterns. This is a fun set of 3.
- Jane Pope Jewelry stud earrings: I’ve worn a pair of vintage seashell stud earrings every day for the past three years. Every time I put them on I had a panicky feeling that one day I would lose one of them. I actually lost one in the deep end of a swimming pool a couple of years ago, but a very kind man dived down and retrieved it for me. Sadly, a few months ago, I noticed that one of the shells was no longer on my ear. It must have fallen off somewhere in my house, but I have not been able to find it. I’m heartbroken. I decided to look through my earrings to find a replacement. I rediscovered a pair of gold lip studs by Jane Pope Jewelry that I’ve had for ages, but had forgotten about. They’re great and helped me during this period of grieving (lol).
