Artist Maggie Stephenson On Her Creative Inspiration + Finding Confidence In Yourself

Chances are, you’ve probably seen Maggie Stephenson’s work, even if you didn’t realize it. She has worked with brands like Free People, Society6, Sephora, Anthropologie and many more. Her color palettes are soft and inviting, and I can’t get enough of how soft yet strong her depiction of the female form is. I want to wallpaper my house in her prints. I’m thrilled to introduce you to Maggie and get her take on her artistic style, where she finds creative inspiration, and the world’s chillest bedtime routine. Let’s get into it!

Tell us a bit about yourself!

I was born in Poland, raised in Germany, and came to the U.S. about 15 years ago. I absolutely love being here but also love to travel whenever possible. My favorite thing to do when I’m not working is to spend time with the people I love, preferably outdoors, away from electronics. I enjoy creating things, whether through my work or through crafting, DIY projects, or even cooking. Staying active in a creative way and recharging in nature, are priceless to me.

What’s your sign?

Taurus :)

How would you describe your artistic style?

I’ve been very inspired by abstract art, cubism, and a color palette that evokes a certain kind of feeling. I would hope it comes across as peaceful and calming, always having an in-the-moment vibe about it.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Taking care of my son, fur baby daughter, spending time with loved ones, creating and working on projects, and getting in much-needed ‘me time.’ I love a good balance of work and nurturing personal life, so I try to focus on work-related things early in the day and on personal life during the second part of the day. When both are in perfect balance is when I’m most productive and fulfilled.

Favorite project to date?

There are too many to name, but working for Causebox has definitely been a highlight. Not only was designing the annual winter box fun, but getting to visit the headquarters in LA and working alongside such incredibly kind and creative people, has been a memory I’ll never forget.

Where do you find creative inspiration?

Most of the time it would be outdoors, in nature, when the sun is shining and I’m completely relaxed. Music can also be a great source of inspiration, or when I’m out driving.

What are your all-time favorite, must-read books?

Unfortunately because of limited time, I’m not a big book reader these days. I enjoy non-fiction books that allow me to take bits and pieces in here and there. Mostly faith-based, as they fuel my soul and give me inner peace. As far as non-fiction, I do remember really liking The Stone and the Flute by Hans Bemmann, but unfortunately never finished it because it’s so long. Maybe someday.

Do you listen to music or podcasts when you work? Any favs right now?

Music is such an important part of creating for me. I always keep it on. My playlist is a bit all over the place. Some of my favorites are ’60s hits, ’90s R&B, and indie.

What’s always in your fridge?

All kinds of juices—pomegranate, orange, carrot, green juice. Always several kinds of hummus. The occasional cheesecake piece.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee all the way! I can’t start my day without it and won’t speak to anyone before it. It keeps me sane.

If you could fill your home with one type of flower, what would it be?

That’s a tough one. It’s probably a toss-up between poppy and sunflower.

Any favorite local gems you love in Florida?

I’m absolutely in love with @communityloaves in Jacksonville. It has the best asiago avocado bagel and fresh-pressed OJ. Everything is fresh and delicious! The bread reminds me of what I’m used to eating while growing up in Germany. It also has amazing pastries! I could go on and on. It’s definitely worth the drive if you’re not from the area.

Do you have a daily style uniform/look?

As colorful as my art is, when it comes to daily style, I prefer to dress in neutrals. Mostly grays or blacks. I love a dark pant with Docs and a simple comfy tee.

What’s always in your beauty cabinet?

Perfume, moisturizer, and many different kinds of lip balm.

What’s your bedtime ritual?

I love to listen to music while I wind down with a cup of tea or a glass of wine and some lit candles or incense. Having a peaceful environment lets me wind down and unplug after a creative day. It’s super important for me to shut my mind off and allow myself this time to relax before I end the day. It makes a huge difference in how I feel the next day and my energy levels.

When do you feel your best?

When my job is done, projects have been finished and something new has been created. It’s the perfect release and feeling of accomplishment that lets me then focus on being in the moment and also moving forward with something new.

Anything big and exciting on the horizon for you?

So many exciting things in my career as well as personal life. I try not to look ahead too much and get too excited until things actually happen, but life is beautiful right now and I’m hanging on to that feeling.

Favorite quote

‘Believe in yourself.’ It’s nothing extravagant, but so very important. If you alone don’t believe in yourself, nobody else will. You can have all the resources in the world but without confidence and the will to reach for things you set your mind to, it will be difficult to move forward. Having confidence and believing in yourself is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves.
