Houseplants

Some plants have been proven to convert harmful chemicals, like formaldehyde and benzene, into oxygen. Place houseplants in different areas of the home to get the maximum benefit of their air quality purification abilities. Here are some of our favorite plants that will improve the air quality in your home.

Air Purifiers

A quality air purifier can be an investment, but seeing as our climate doesn’t seem to be getting any cleaner any time soon, it’s one you’ll want to prioritize. It’s easy to forget when scrubbing your floors and polishing your surfaces that it’s equally important to clean the air circulating around your living space. Dust, pollen, mold and other allergens exist in the air we breathe every day. Just because they’re invisible doesn’t mean they’re not there.

Choosing the best air purifier to suit your lifestyle is vital to ensuring good health and the cleanliness of your home.

Natural Cleaning Products

Every time you wipe down the bathroom or kitchen counter with a product that contains harmful chemicals, you leave a little bit of toxic residue behind. A much safer option is switching to natural cleaning methods and nontoxic cleansers. Look for products with these terms on their labels: biodegradable; plant-based; hypoallergenic; and formulated without dye or synthetic fragrance.

Swap Plastic for Glass

When you look around, you may be amazed at how many of your household items are made out of plastic. Toss any containers, cups, plates, bowls, etc. that are plastic and replace them with glass or ceramic.

Ditch the Fragrance

Shampoos and soaps that list fragrance as an ingredient tend to contain phthalates, chemicals used in all sorts of products from kids’ toys to air fresheners. Sure, those products smell nice, but studies have shown that exposure to phthalates may cause health problems like allergies. Buy fragrance-free whenever possible for your daily household items.

Burn Beeswax Candles

Swap your everyday paraffin candles for beeswax candles instead. Beeswax are a natural compound that burns clean as opposed to paraffin candles that can release contaminants while burning.

Use Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal air filters are a great way to naturally filter and purify the air quality within your home because the charcoal will absorb toxins in the air without releasing any odor.

Utilize Himalayan Salt Lamps

Salt lamps are said to provide health benefits because they are “natural ionizers,” meaning they change the electrical charge of the circulating air. They can also help clean the air through a process called hygroscopy, which attracts and absorbs contaminated water molecules from the immediate environment and locks them into the salt crystal. The process has the amazing ability to remove cigarette smoke, dust and other contaminants from the air.
