Alex Noiret + Scotty Vance On Letting Go Of Ego And Making Creative Magic Together

Chances are, if you’ve been perusing the internet lately, you’ve seen our dear friend Alex Noiret. From modeling Doên in Vogue, to Anthropologie, this lovely creature is is everywhere and we love it. What you may not know is that Alex and her husband are one of the most creative duos we have ever met. Scotty is an incredible photographer and with Alex as his forever subject, we can’t get enough of the incredible content they create. Read on to learn more about this inspirational couple and how creativity fuels their relationship.

It typically takes focus and patience to get into, and then can suddenly feel spontaneous, effortless and magical. This feeling of creative energy and connection, always makes our hearts sing! It means knowing what we love—creating!

Tell us a little bit about who you are and your love story!

We met six years ago in Los Angeles when Alex took a break from modeling and Scott was a touring musician. We were instantly attached at the hip, married a few years later, and eventually, began creating together as photographer and muse. Now, we live with our orange tabby “child,” Oliver, and continue to create, both together and as individuals—still ever attached at the hip!

What does creative energy mean to you?

There’s a certain sweet spot in modeling and photography that is energizing, connecting, fulfilling and addicting. Usually, it is found between oneself and the subject, or between oneself and the creative team. It feels like a marriage of timing, vision, vulnerability and passion falling into place all at once; in other words, creative energy. It typically takes focus and patience to get into, and then can suddenly feel spontaneous, effortless and magical. This feeling of creative energy and connection, always makes our hearts sing! It means knowing what we love—creating!

What’s your favorite thing about working together? Can you tell us a bit about the creative process?

When we’re in our groove, in sync and both working toward one goal, it’s fantastic and so much fun. We balance each other well. However, people would be surprised to find that working together creatively isn’t always as smooth as it may seem. It requires a lot of trust, patience and letting go (especially of control or ego). We are ever-changing, from who we are as human beings to what we like in coloring and styles. So, naturally, working together can take adapting and compromise, which can be extremely beneficial. Our creative process is often a mixed bag, but we both tend to share our ideas, receive input and wear all the hats depending on what needs to be done! It’s a true collaboration.

Where are some of your favorite places to find inspiration?

A: Nature. Golden hour, where shadows dance and peculiar forms come to life!

S: Art galleries, concerts and any place where I can admire the vulnerability of someone’s creation.

Favorite books or albums for when you’re feeling uninspired?

Usually, when one of us is feeling uninspired, the other won’t be! It is pretty great; it leaves little room for uninspired moments (though we do think quieter moments are good for creativity, too).

A: I prefer to go on a walk and “hunt for beauty” to get my mind…well, out of my mind…focusing on all that is around me. It helps refine my eye and “get the creative juices flowing.”

S: I think it’s important to put yourself in the way of inspiration and keep an open mind. But in general, I try not to force inspiration. I love old films, and sometimes watching one will spark inspiration.

In a world full of noise, how do you focus on creating authentic work?

A: I always listen to my heart and intuition. I’ll immediately know if something doesn’t feel authentic or true to what it is I connect with or want to put out into the world.

S: I try to soak up everything I can from the creative worlds I’m inspired by—music, design, photography and art; I let my intuition and mind make what it will from these things.

What are some of your favorite rituals as a couple?

A nice dinner at a restaurant after a long day of shooting.

What’s your favorite thing about working creatively with your spouse?

We are best friends and lovers before anything else, so being able to spend our days together is precious to us. We feel fortunate to be able to work together so often, growing and sharing in our goals, the highs and lows.

“luck is what happens at the crossroads of preparation and opportunity.”

What’s next for you both?

We are continuing our creative journeys as individuals and as a couple. We both currently work with brands and teams we love, and extending this, continuing to represent people and products we love, is one of our goals! We’re now focused on refining, dreaming, aiming and doing more of what we love in our work and various passion projects.

Favorite quote on creativity?

Yves Saint Laurent said something like, “La chance, ça s’attrape.” It means, “chance is caught,” or in other words, “luck is what happens at the crossroads of preparation and opportunity.”
