The Importance Of A Mentor + How To Find One

Being an entrepreneur is amazing, but it’s also really hard and can often be isolating. Most likely as a new entrepreneur, you’re heading into unknown waters and without a life vest. Even if you’re not new at this, there are always challenges that come up as you grow. That’s why finding a mentor is very important for small business owners. They can provide so much value, support and advice as you develop new skills to create a more sustainable business.

Mentors are crucial for helping you gain knowledge that you probably don’t even know you need. They can see areas where you may be weak, guide you in the right direction and give you tools for growth. It’s also nice to have a mentor that will share the good and the bad about business and be honest with you. That way, you can relate, feel less alone and know that they’ve struggled too and have come out on top.

You’re probably thinking, “This sounds great and all, but how do I find a mentor?!” It can be tricky to find someone who is willing to spend their precious time helping you, but the good news is that a lot of successful people love to talk about themselves and would be thrilled at the chance to be called a mentor. It may take some time to find the right person, but it can happen. Here are a few ways you can reach out and land the perfect mentor:

Be A Good Person

This is the first step and the most important step. You must be a good person. Meaning that you need to be connecting to people and fostering meaningful relationships in your industry. Send thoughtful emails, reply kindly to all DMs, comment on social media with interesting remarks, compliment people on things that they’re doing well. That way down the road if you’re looking to connect or ask a favor, people will be more inclined to respond and help.

Be Social

If you’re really starting from scratch and don’t feel comfortable reaching out cold to strangers (wouldn’t recommend this anyway), think about joining groups and attending events. There are so many amazing ways to connect to people in all different industries. Even online groups can be beneficial. Maybe there is a Facebook Group you can join to start!

Look To Your Heroes

If you want to figure out who your ideal mentor is, start paying attention to the people who you really admire. Make a list of your top five role models and narrow down who may be able to realistically be a mentor to you. If none of them seem like they will ever have the time, look around at similar people who may be able to give you the advice you need to emulate the career you desire.

Be Prepared

When it comes time to ask someone to be a mentor, have your elevator pitch ready and make sure to send them a letter or email that is very thoughtful and concise. Make sure you lay out the time commitment, what you will give to this relationship and be clean about your goals. It’s great to mention what you like about their work. If possible, ask for a formal mentorship in person. If you can’t land a mentorship, try asking for an informational interview or simply a coffee date.

The most important thing is to connect with others and be thoughtful. The more you do this, the more opportunities you will have to work with others in all kinds of capacities! So get out there and start networking.
