5 Things You Should Know How To Cook Before Moving Out

Whether you’re heading off to college, moving into your first apartment or just want to start cooking like an adult…there are a few recipes you should know. They may sound easy, but you would be surprised how much they trip people up. Before you live on your own, our contributor, Kaleigh Glaza, is here with base-level recipes to fill your belly and impress your roommate.

Roasted Chicken

Ohhhh chicken. Mom used to make it all the time. It seemed so easy. But if you do it wrong, you could end up with food poisoning real quick. If you do it right though, so much goodness awaits. This roasted chicken recipe is oh-so juicy, plus buying a whole chicken allows you to save money over buying individual cuts of meat. Save the bones for other recipes, too!

Classic Spaghetti

First off, if you don’t know how to boil and correctly cook pasta, you need to learn now. It sounds simple, but so many people over or undercook their pasta, and a good pasta is (obviously) the base of this dish. Spaghetti is comfort food, can be shared with your roommates and the sauce can be frozen and saved for later. It’s the perfect meal!

Proper Scrambled Eggs

No one makes no-nonsense, delicious food quite like Anthony Bourdain. So, when he says this is THE way to make scrambled eggs, that’s all we need to hear. You ideally should know how to make great eggs long before you move out, but if you haven’t yet, now is the time.

Grilled Lemon-Foil Salmon

If you want an easy dish that looks more complicated and fancier? This is your meal. Perfect for date night or when you want to pretend you’re back home with the ‘rents…without breaking the bank.

Chicken Noodle Soup

Remember those chicken bones we told you to save from the Baked Chicken recipe? Add them in here! Making your own chicken stock will add to the fun and personal touch of your very own chicken noodle soup. This is another comfort food best made in batches! It’s perfect for the upcoming fall and winter nights and is a dish you’ll never get tired of.

These recipes are the perfect base for a career as an at-home culinarian. Perfect these, and then start making your own custom dishes.
