A Quick Daily Cleaning Routine For Busy Schedules

When it comes to household chores, my two biggest gripes are laundry and dirty floors; both of which seem to be never-ending. I live and work in a home with two small kiddos and a dog that is super cute but sheds like it’s going out of style. Set anything on the floor and it’s sure to be covered in white dog hairs in a matter of seconds. We also don’t have a housekeeper, so it feels like I am cleaning up during all my free moments.

What is the cleaning routine of a mom of two who also works from home? I’m going to share that with you and the cleaning item that has changed the game!

Like I mentioned, cleaning the floors and vacuuming feels like a full-time job around here. I sweep every day and vacuum every other day. Somehow the floors are disgusting each and every time even though I’m trying my best to stay on top of it. Then iRobot® got in touch and asked if I wanted to try out its Roomba® i7+ robot vacuum. I’ve been wanting to try one of these for years! I’ve heard really good things about it, and to be honest, it is just really, really cool. In just one week of using the iRobot® Roomba® i7+ robot vacuum, I feel like my cleaning routine is forever changed.

First off, it takes the pressure off me. I no longer have to be the one constantly sweeping and vacuuming the house. Time is essential to me with juggling the kids at school and work so anything that gives me more time is a life-saver! Plus, you don’t have to worry about emptying the bin every single time. It automatically empties the bin into a bag that holds up to 30 bins of dirt, dust and hair! I can literally set it and forget about vacuuming for months.

Second, it is so efficient. It hugs all the corners of the house that are hard for me to get with a traditional vacuum. Its Dual Multi-Surface Rubber Brushes hug different floor surfaces, staying in close contact with wood and carpets. Plus, it is made with pet hair in mind and won’t get tangled with hair. The i7+ robot vacuum learns, maps and adapts to your home using ImprintSmart Mapping technology, letting you control which rooms are cleaned and when. Wherever you are, you can control when, where and how your robot cleans from the iRobot HOME App. Plus, you can enjoy hands-free control with Alexa and Google Assistant.

I love when cleaning is smart and efficient. It takes the pressure off me and allows me to have more time to work and be with my family. I think that is extremely important in this overscheduled age we’re in. Our Roomba® i7+ robot vacuum has become a fun member of our household, too. The kids have named him Buster and like to chase him around pretending it’s a game. It makes cleaning a little more fun!

You can save up to $150 on select iRobot Floor Care Robots until September 7th! Head to the iRobot site to see its offerings.

Here is a breakdown of my daily cleaning routine:

Mornings

After I drop off the kids at school, it’s usually about 9 a.m. and I spend about 30 to 40 minutes speed-cleaning the house before I start work for the day. I’ve found that a tidy house really helps my productivity at work and eases my anxiety.

  • Make beds: I try to make the beds every morning. It’s true what they say, making your bed every morning feels like your first real accomplishment and sets you up for a good day. I’m starting to have my 5-year-old make her own bed to help teach her the importance of chores and healthy habits.
  • Tidy kitchen: This is a big one. Usually after the mad dash of getting the kids to school in the morning, I come home to dishes and food everywhere. I typically will tidy them and empty the dishwasher every single morning.
  • Schedule the Roomba i7+: I use the iRobot HOME App to schedule my Roomba in the mornings. Typically, I schedule it for Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 10 a.m.. If it’s messy on a day that’s not scheduled, I simply just hit CLEAN. It’s so simple and satisfying. On Thursday, I like to do a dry sweep with the iRobot Braava jet® robot mop and then a wet mop on Saturday. I’ll share my weekend cleaning routine soon. It seems like a lot of floor cleaning, but I’ve found with my kids, husband and dog, it’s needed.
  • Start laundry: I always have laundry to do. I like to start one early in the morning and get two loads down by the end of the day.
  • Straighten up living room: Every morning, I quickly tidy any toys or miscellaneous things left out in the living room. I keep it easy. We have a large basket I can throw toys into and another for blankets and pillows.

Evening Routine

  • Clean kitchen: My husband is the cook in our family. It’s something I greatly appreciate, so I usually take on most of the dishes. Sometimes the kiddos will help me, but mainly after dinner, my husband will take them to play and I will spend about 20 to 30 minutes cleaning the dishes, prepping lunches and starting the dishwasher if it’s full.
  • Fold and put away laundry: If I have time, I will put away laundry before bedtime. I will start in the kids room while my husband gets them into the bath. Then move on to our clothes.
  • Family clean up time: Right before bed, I usually like to spend about 5 to 10 minutes having us all clean up any messes we’ve made. The kids clean their toys and we will help with anything else. Sometimes we will put on music and make it into a fun activity.
  • Quick bathroom wipe-down: I hate cleaning bathrooms! It’s my least-favorite chore, so I usually avoid it as long as possible. I prefer to do it on the weekends, but since it gets so dirty, waiting that long I’m trying to get into the habit of doing a wipe-down of the bathrooms twice a week at night. That way, come the weekend, it’s not as dreadful.

A few extra things I’ve started: Since we don’t currently have any help with the cleaning, I have to be really diligent about tidying when I can. If something will only take a minute or two, I try to do it right then and not procrastinate. I grab as I go. If there is something I can pick up and bring to its home, I do it as I head into that room. The more I can do at night, the better. I’ve found that even if I’m dead tired, it’s way better for us as a family to prep the night before than in the morning (doing the dishes, laying out school clothes, prepping the lunches and backpacks, etc.).

My final note is that for any of you hard workers who are also taking on most of the household chores, be easy on yourself. It can be hard not to beat yourself up about the house being dirty or being behind on chores, but life gets in the way sometimes. That’s why finding ways to delegate the chores and finding tools that make your life easier is key. Plus, maybe an extra snuggle with your child or an evening bath should override those piled high dishes. They will get done. Don’t worry!
