4 Fun + Easy Weekend Workout Ideas

Working out is one of those things that you either love to do or dislike it very much. However, whether you enjoy it or not, right now with many states just recently easing up on stay-at-home orders and other states experiencing the worst of the pandemic, working out has taken a backseat for most of us. The bottom line is that while many gyms and health centers are closed right now, it’s more important now than ever for us to be active. Being stuck at home for the last few months has definitely had an impact on our mind and our bodies, leaving us feeling unhealthy and blah.

If you’re working from home or have kids to care for (or both!), it might not be easy to take time to work out during the week, so the weekend is the perfect time to enjoy a little me-time and catch up on exercise. Your body—and your mind—will surely benefit!

Here are a few fun weekend workout ideas:

’80s Power Walk

This sounds too simple, right? But taking a walk outside, whether it’s around your neighborhood or somewhere new, is a great way to exercise while also enjoying the warm weather (hello, vitamin D) and fresh air. Try walking at a fast pace to get your heart rate up and increase the intensity of your workout. Get a group of your best girlfriends together for a socially distanced power walking session. Neon tracksuits and sweatbands are highly encouraged. Basically, the more 80s you dress, the faster you’ll walk. Make a community playlist of your favorite ’80s pop hits that you can all listen to and get moving!

“Off-Road” Running

Prefer running? Take advantage of the many virtual races that are available right now. This is the perfect option for seasoned runners who miss partaking in races, and for newbies who want to start running but need a little motivation. Instead of the usual run around the neighborhood, go for an “off road” run! Rejuvenate the body and mind by getting off the road and into nature. Running a path or trail provides a scenic backdrop and tests your coordination on new terrain. Just make sure you have the right kind of sneakers, and if it’s your first time off the road, pick a path that isn’t likely to (literally) trip you up.

Have a Soul Train-Inspired Dance Party

Raise your hand if you love at-home dance parties (*both hands raised*). Turn on your favorite tunes and let loose. You might not realize it, but dancing is not only fun, but also great for the body. Ain’t no party like a Soul Train party, so get ready to groove. This is a great way to get the family involved with you, but you can also host your own private dance party. All you need is the right playlist, but a disco ball doesn’t hurt.

 Music-Led Yoga

In such stressful times as these, it’s important to breathe and be mindful, and yoga encourages you to do both. The stretching and bending involved are great for the bones and joints, and when you add in deep-breathing exercises and meditation, you’re also helping to ease the mind. Take your practice one step further this weekend by doing a music-led practice.  Sessions set to a popular artist or soundtrack are a popular favorite for new and veteran yogis alike. Try a Beyonce themed flow session, a Beatles flow, or even a set to the Hamilton soundtrack for artist themes. YouTube has some great videos to follow, and many yoga studios and professional yogis are offering classes virtual right now for you to enjoy in the comfort of your own home.
