I’ve been working from home for more than five years, and I have to confess that I’m endlessly changing up my home office. I like to keep my décor and layout fresh. I tend to draw my inspiration and daily energy from my surroundings. If it’s been a busy day and I find myself under a mountain of clutter, I’m instantly anxious by the realization of it all.
Part of my time reflecting lately has been about my work life. After all, it is Earth Month as I write this, and eco-anxiety is official. I knew I need to figure out how to make my office (and my life, really), more eco-friendly.
I spend so much of my day in my home office, and I naturally felt that creating a more green workspace would only benefit me.
Use Eco-Friendly Supplies
Aside from cutting consumption all around, consider all of the things you can move to digital. And when you are considering purchasing something for your office, aim for shopping at local and ethical brands. Take the time to research different shops in your area that boast sustainable factors, or that are actively committed to green practices.
I’m a big fan of paper products. I use a paper planner and have a lot more sticky notes and planner accessories than one should. It goes far beyond ensuring I have choices. However, I’ve taken responsibility and the best I can do now is use what I have in my collection and not purchase anything new. I am trying to make my organizational paper preferences and find ways to make it virtual. It’s really helped me keep up my productivity, as well.
Add More Greenery
You can’t go wrong with adding some plant life into your workspace. They have been known to increase productivity and air quality. Plus, who wouldn’t want something pretty and soothing sitting on their desk? Adding houseplants into your home office décor can help you feel more at ease and relaxed through the workday.
Less Food Waste
Lunch has become more important to my workday. It’s a time to connect with my boyfriend in the middle of a hectic day through a nice meal. I do recognize how easy it is to go for ready-made meals that include a lot of waste along the way. I have been working on making little swaps here and there to be less wasteful. But more importantly, I have become more aware of my bad habits, and I am intent on trying to correct them.
Use LED Lights
Your office lighting is important, and can also affect your productivity. Choosing LED lights not only look better, but they are usually better for the environment, as well. Plus, they typically last longer than standard bulbs, which need to be switched out often. There are so many different options out there, it won’t be hard to find a lamp or lighting system that works for you.
