5 Ways To Incorporate Mediterranean Longevity Practices Into Your Life This Spring

I have to say, this post couldn’t have come at a more convenient time. Wellness has really been at the top of mind for many of us. After all, it is one of the few things that we can control at the moment.

Studies have shown incredible beneficial effects on health in the Mediterranean population. The traditional diet of the region is filled with antioxidants and focused on moderation. It’s been dubbed “the gold standard in preventive medicine.” Even EatingWell recently dedicated a special edition to the Mediterranean and the lifelong health benefits.

However, the Mediterranean lifestyle shouldn’t just be reserved for your kitchen. Adapting to the lifestyle itself can help you support your wellness goals. Here’s how you can embrace the Mediterranean lifestyle in five simple ways.

Mindful Eating

The great thing about the Mediterranean diet is that recipes focus on an array of good-for-you ingredients. Think tons of vegetables, fruit, nuts and whole grains. Plus, tons of olive oil. Focus on eating the right carbs, and skip the sweets and sugar.

There are so many ways to enjoy your meals, but it’s important to stay cognizant of what you’re putting into your body. Think about your portions as well.

Enjoy the Simple Things

It’s time to slow down. There is no rush through life, especially now, and taking the time to enjoy the simple little positive aspects of your life. Acknowledge your stress, but also remind yourself not to sweat the small things. Worrying hardly ever pays off. Embrace the things that make you feel relaxed and happy.

Spend Time with Loved Ones

For people in the Mediterranean, family and friends are very important. It’s not uncommon for multiple generations to live in the same home. No, you don’t need to move them in, but spending meaningful time together can work wonders for your overall happiness.

Your relationships and social life tend to play a big part in your mental health and wellness. Obviously, now isn’t a great time to get together in-person, but virtual get-togethers can be as easy as a scheduled FaceTime call with your closest friends.

Keep Things Moving

Obviously, physical activity is essential for all of us. Aside from reaching health goals, being physically active can really help you with winter blues and common stress. A 15-minute walk could be all you need, or maybe you’d thrive in a 45-minute yoga class. Get moving and keep in mind how good it feels mind, body and soul.

Be Productive

Forget multitasking. Slow living involves meaningful moments and living a purpose-filled life. No, that’s doesn’t mean you should be busy all of the time. But you should really focus on where your time is going, and how you’re using it.

Remember, productivity doesn’t always deal with work. This is about maximizing your time and improving your way of life from creativity to health. Take up hobbies that feel good for you, emphasize how you spend your downtime. Make it a thoughtful habit to note how you’re spending your time. Does it make you happy? Does it over the needle forward?
