Easy Family Summer Activities + Our Go-To Sunscreen

Being outdoors is essential for my family. We’re happiest in nature, and during the summer, we spend most of our time exploring. Whether we’re dipping our toes in the ocean, taking a family hike, enjoying a summer picnic or barbecuing in our backyard, we love being outside!

With all that summer sun exposure, I’m vigilant about all of us being protected with sunscreen. I want my kids to know how important it is for us to always be wearing sunscreen when we’re enjoying the benefits of being outdoors. This summer, we’ve been using CeraVe Hydrating Sunscreen Face Lotion SPF 30, and it’s become an integral part of our summer routine.

I was really excited to try CeraVe Hydrating Sunscreen Face Lotion SPF 30. My family suffers from sensitive skin and my son and I have eczema. So CeraVe’s products are already staples in our home. We use the CeraVe Healing Ointment and also the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser. I trust that its products will not be irritating on our skin. This summer I took this sunscreen with us everywhere. One of the best things about it is that it’s suitable for the whole family, which means I don’t have to carry loads of different sunscreens with me. Such a perk!

There are many reasons why I love CeraVe Hydrating Sunscreen Face Lotion SPF 30. First, it’s a 100 percent mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Ceramides help lock moisture in. It’s oil-free, paraben-free and fragrance-free. It’s been allergy tested. Even though it does leave a white cast, it spreads easily and leaves a lightweight, non-greasy feel. That makes it easier for me to apply on the kids and is nice for me to wear under makeup. It also doesn’t make me break out, which is a huge bonus for me. So many sunscreens cause me to break out.

I’ve been super happy using this on our summer outings. It’s such a relief to have sun protection that is efficient, safe and comfortable for the whole family!

Our favorite summer family activities:

  • Weekly farmers’ market trips. Every Sunday, we look forward to cooking homemade pancakes and then head to our local farmers’ market. It’s such a simple activity. We live in walking distance and we bring our cute market bags and baskets with us to get the following week’s fruits and veggies. I love what it teaches the kids about local, healthy food.
  • Family hikes. There is something special about family hikes. I think it’s because we’re all very present. We have to appreciate our surroundings and explore. Plus, it opens up time for us to just talk.
  • Park play. This is an obvious one, but this summer, we made it a goal to check out all the local parks in our surrounding areas. It’s made it less mundane for us parents, and the kids enjoy ranking their favorite ones.
  • The library. We live in walking distance to our local library and it’s one of my favorite places to visit. We go once a week. On Fridays, the library has a kids music class and sometimes it shows movies and hosts story time. It’s truly something that we all enjoy, and it feels like a lost art!
  • Picnic at the park. I love a picnic and it’s something that the kids find really special. It’s so fun to sit outside and enjoy delicious food. My daughter loves it so much she once said, “This is the best ever! I love the food and hearing the birds tweet.”
  • Swimming. This year, we became members at a local pool and it’s been one of the best things ever! We all love to swim and it’s awesome to have it as an option every single day for us to enjoy. I love the idea of the kids remembering their summers by the pool.
  • The beach. The beach is our special place. We haven’t ventured into camping yet, so the beach is our version of camping. We spend the day combing for shells, dipping our toes in the water, making sand castles. If there is a day we don’t actually want to sit at the beach, we also like to head to West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz to walk and ride scooters.
