How My Life + Friendships Would Be Completely Different Without Social Media

Social media gets a lot of flack for creating unrealistic expectations and self-comparison. But it can also create beautiful friendships. I think back on where I met my closest friends and I realize that 95 percent of the people I’m closest with came from social media. Which, 10 years ago, would have sounded crazy, but is completely normal this day in age. As an introvert, I am so grateful for the friendships and opportunities social media has created for me. I’m incredibly socially awkward, so cultivating relationships through IG and other channels was really helpful for me. How different life would be without those tiny squares!

I’d probably have a different job.

I met Taylor through our mutual friend Dr. Cassidy, who I also met through IG. Cassidy recommended me to to Taylor for business consulting, and the rest is history!

I probably wouldn’t have a podcast co-host.

Today’s the day! I’m so excited to share with you my big surprise – meet my new co-host, @taylrd_designs! You may remember Tayler from an earlier episode (the one about quitting your shitty day job 😉) and I’m so excited to have her joining me bi-weekly as my new co-host. Tayler is wicked smart, funny, and one of the most intelligent marketing professionals I’ve ever met, so I’m so stoked about the value she’s going to bring to Pretty Okay Podcast. You can listen to our first episode together on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, or by visiting the link in our bio. I know you guys are going to love Tayler just as much as I do! 🌸 photos by my angel @merzydotes

My new podcast co-host is also a friend from social media. We met through the app and eventually met in person a couple of years later. Through social media, I discovered what a smart, badass female warrior she is, and she recently joined on as my podcast co-host.

I wouldn’t have met my kindred spirit soul sister.

My girlfriend Merrill is one I met through friends of friends on social media. You know when your friends tag a certain person enough times you end up following them as well? That’s how we came to be. Who knew she would end up becoming one of my most-treasured friendships. She is my person. It makes me so sad to think that I might never have met her if it weren’t for social media. But luckily for me, I did!

I probably wouldn’t be an amateur florist.

I use the term “amatuer” very, very loosley. Budget floral arranging is my favorite weekend pastime. I would never have sparked this interest or had the resources if it weren’t for all the floral friends I made on social media. Actually, the majority of them started out as clients because they found me on social media, but that blossomed (no pun intended) into IRL friendships. In this picture, you can see the massive bucket of flowers one of these said floral friends hooked me up with for Mother’s Day!

I probably would be super lonely in motherhood.

I met every single woman in this photo on Instagram. Having a baby can be extremely isolating, but social media made it so much easier to connect with other mamas. Even when I was trapped under a sleeping babe and not leaving my house, I’m super grateful for the connection social media offered me from the comfort of my own couch.
