7 Sunny Stateside Locations For Your Winter Escape

When those winter blues sink in, be sure you have a plan ready to escape the cold. Luckily, the U.S. has many sunny spots that are just a short flight away. Whether you’re looking to kick back on the beach, or explore a city’s culture, contributor Sarah Koller is here with seven destinations that promise to provide lots of vitamin D—no passport required. Grab your sunnies and get scrolling to see all they have to offer below.

1. Scottsdale, Arizona

There’s no better city to be once the cold kicks in than this desert destination. The resort-like vibe is a major attraction point for those looking to soak in some poolside rays. Or, for those with a more adventurous side, the variety of golf courses and hiking trails make it well worth the trek. Just be sure to have that water bottle handy! (Photo by Broma Bakery)

2. Key West, Florida

Head down to Florida’s southernmost point and you’ll find temps in the 70s and 80s throughout the stretch of winter. This fun island-city is known for its lively scenery, watersports and nightlife, but if you’re simply looking for some time in the sand, its famed beaches will win you right over. 3. Savannah, Georgia

There are many pros to traveling to this historic city mid-winter. Foremost of these includes: lowered hotel rates, less tourism and more local festivals. If these reasons alone aren’t enough to get you out of your snow gear, the top-notch southern charm certainly will. (Photo by Kassandra Kondo)

4. San Diego, California

Take your taste buds on their own vacay. This year-round sunny spot has a serious craft brewery and culinary scene that’s worth checking out. The best part? You can go back to rockin’ sweats and loose sweaters after all of your indulging (although a walk alongside any of the scenic beaches would do!). (Photo by Jetsetter)

5. Palm Beach, Florida

Pick out your prettiest Lilly Pulitzer dress and make your way to a spot boasting lots of great cocktails, healthy eats and gorgeous scenery. Favorite activities include biking by the water and exploring the lavish shopping scene. Either way you play it, you’re bound to walk away from this bright area feeling more energized than before. 6. Kauai, Hawaii

While this one requires a bit more travel than the others, it’s an escape worth the extra hours. From famed beaches (with surf, sand and sun!) to sweet shaved ices to snap-worthy sunsets, this island outside the U.S. offers a true taste of the tropics—and just the time away from the office you’ve been looking for. 7. New Orleans, Louisiana

Down here the gumbo’s always warm (even if your hometown may not be). The comfortable weather makes it the perfect place to explore historic districts and lively night scenes alike. Carnival and Mardi Gras are two holidays in particular that make this area an action-packed winter retreat. Just be sure to save some time for a trip to Café Du Monde before you leave.
