How To Take A Last-Minute Summer Vacation On A Budget

It seems like it was just Christmas, doesn’t it? If summer sneaked up on you like it did us, you might not be the most prepared for a summer vacation. Luckily, even if you’re not ready to plunk down premium rates on pricey resorts, you can still take a killer summer vacation on a budget. Here are some of our favorite tried-and-true travel secrets to help you save some money and still have the trip of a lifetime.

Follow hotels on social media.

Did you know a lot of hotels offer discounts directly through Instagram or Facebook? Following along with hotels you’re interested in can save you up to 50 percent on rooms! So make sure to peruse the accounts you’re following before booking!

Go off the beaten path.

Look, flying to Hawaii on Fourth of July weekend is going to be pricey, OK? If you’re pressed for time and prices are skyrocketing, try going the less conventional route. Do some research and look for unique and hidden gems in cities that aren’t necessarily destination spots like Maui or San Francisco.

Be flexible.

You could roll the dice and try to score a last-minute trip to anywhere, but if you’re set on a specific destination, the dates you choose to fly out could impact your overall spend. Certain days are cheaper than others based on foot traffic, so if you don’t have to leave on a Friday after work, you’ll have more flexibility in budget.

Make a list of free activities.

The best part about lounging on the beach? It’s free (or very inexpensive!)! If you’re on a budget, allocate your finances toward travel and lodging, and explore the freebies your destination has to offer. Hiking, free museums and park picnics are all great activities to take advantage of without going over budget.

Curb pre-vacation spending.

If you’re anything like us, vacations make us want to go shopping! But don’t blow your budget before your plane even takes off. Build a vacation capsule wardrobe to limit spending and maximize fun.

Focus on airlines with the best amenities.

Flying should be comfortable, even if you’re not upgrading to first class. Find an airline that is affordable, but also quality. It will improve the whole vacation experience without leaving you feeling like you are just a herd of cattle. We prefer flying with Alaska Airlines for the best deals and level of comfort! They were even just ranked #1 by JD Powers for the eleventh year in a row!
