The Mary Pickford cocktail is named after the legendary Hollywood actress herself, Mary Pickford. It’s said that the cocktail was created in the 1920s in Havana, Cuba; a popular destination for Hollywood elites during the Prohibition era.
The drink combines dry Cuban-style rum with fresh pineapple, grenadine and maraschino liqueur. A variation of the classic daiquiri, the drink is a little on the sweet side, but so was “America’s Sweetheart,” Mary Pickford. The cocktail is timeless in its appeal and perfect when channeling your inner silent movie star.
A little fun fact for the next time you’re in LA: Pickford, along with Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith founded the United Artists film studio with the intention of controlling their own film interests. Their flagship building and theater was built in 1927 in downtown LA.
Almost a century later, it is now home to the Ace Hotel. You can still see many of Pickford’s personal touches including much of the Spanish Gothic architecture she personally had recreated from Segovia Cathedral in Spain, found throughout the theater as well as in the crown of the building.
The Mary Pickford
Ingredients
- 1/4 ounce grenadine
- 1/4 ounces maraschino liqueur
- 1 ounce pineapple juice
- 2 ounces white rum
Directions
Combine ingredients in a shaking tin. Shake and strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with three brandied cherries.
