5 Tips For The Last-Minute Hostess

I know, you’re probably reading this and thinking, “Um, social distancing, Sam.” And I know. We’re not really “hosting” at the moment. But I like to be proactive rather than reactive, so I’ve been thinking a lot about when we are able to gather safely again and what that will look like. I don’t know about you, but my husband isn’t a planner like I am. When he is the one coordinating get-togethers, they are often last-minute and spur of the moment. I can’t tell you how much this stresses me out. But I’ve learned a few tricks over the years to help me scramble together as a successful last-minute hostess.

Use music

It isn’t a party without some music, and it certainly helps set the scene. Have the music playing before your guests even arrive, so they know they are expected and welcome. It’s helpful to always have a few playlists at the ready, but we have a few you can use if you need help getting started.

Give a warm welcome

Nothing makes your guests feel like you’re a prepared party hostess than by extending a warm welcome when they walk in the door. Offer them a drink straight away, whether it be a glass of wine, cup of coffee or sparkling water. Serve it in your favorite hosting glassware and a fun cocktail napkin and the atmosphere will be set.

Light the candles

I prefer unscented candles when we have guests over, just in case anyone has a sensitivity to perfume-y smells. I keep a stash in our linen closet just for this occasion. The more candles you can add to your space, the chiller the vibe. Don’t forget to put them in the bathroom for that extra thoughtful touch. If you don’t have candles and you know smell isn’t an issue, an essential oil diffuser works great.

Keep charcuterie fixings on hand

The beautiful thing about nice cheese is that it lasts a long time in the fridge. Trader Joe’s is my favorite spot to stock up on cheese at an affordable price. But a lot of the items you can include on a charcuterie board are shelf stable. Here are a few things to keep on hand for those last-minute soirées.

  • Olives
  • Crackers
  • 2-3 different jams
  • 2-3 different mustards
  • A variety of nuts

Add some salami and prosciutto and voila, you have a fancy charcuterie board.

Clean only the communal rooms

My biggest pet peeve about last-minute company is feeling like my house isn’t ready. But unless you’re planning on giving a full tour, there’s no reason to spruce up any of the rooms except for the ones that will be used. The living room, bathroom and kitchen are often the only spaces used during a party. If you have more than one bathroom, designate one for the party bathroom and keep the other closed and off limits.

All of these tips require a bit of proactive planning on your part, but it can be done! Here are a few last-minute hostess must-haves to keep on hand:

Unscented Pillar Candles

Wine Glasses

Cocktail Napkins

Sound System

Serving Platter

Linens
