The Best Patterns To Wear This Spring That Aren’t Floral

It’s springtime and you want to dress for the season, but you keep being haunted by Miranda Priestly’s deadpan, “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” So, you figure it’s time to get creative and wear unique patterns that will fit the season, but won’t have Ms. Priestly scoffing at you, wondering if you even know what cerulean means. Our contributor, Jenna Wohlwend, is here with some great options.

Check out some options that will keep your look fresh and new for the season. And don’t forget, a little color can go a long way!

Stripes

Spring represents new and clean, and of all the patterns, the linear structures of stripes are just that. They are clean and give off an energy of being organized and uncluttered. The best part is that stripes come in all different colors, so you can play with those bright or pastel shades you’ve been wanting to. When vertical, they are also very flattering on all figures, which is ideal if you aren’t feeling super confident after a winter of less activity.

Polka Dots

The general styles of spring tend to be more feminine, and it doesn’t get more feminine than polka dots. These classic, old-time spots give off a playful, warm, yet girly vibe that fits right in with the energy and style of the season. Plus, when you do it right and are really adventurous, you can sometimes mix and match polka dots with other patterns given their simple nature. For instance, matching them with florals is a great way to spruce up the cliché pattern you are trying to get away from, but might have way too much of in your closet!

Ikat

This pattern is inspired by Indonesian weaving patterns and is very bohemian, fresh and bold. It’s also a good option for those of you who don’t feel any particular kinship to the feminine part of the season’s styling. This is a very worldly, sophisticated option and an also be found in many colors.

Paisley

Paisley is essentially floral’s cousin. So if you miss that feminine, girly essence in your spring attire, but are still looking to change it up, paisley is for you. The pattern comes in big and small sizes and a lot of colors. It also adds a vintage, almost ’70s-esque vibe to whatever it is you are sporting.

Jacquard

This print will give off a more glamorous, intricate, vintage essence of a floral and is very vintage in appeal. It is bold and sophisticated and usually adds a different texture to a look as well. You can also have fun with this pattern by pairing it with funky accessories.

Starting to understand Miranda Priestly a bit more? Me too! There are so many great options out there. Make sure to play and experiment with what works best for you whether that is bigger versions of each pattern, or smaller. And remember, if you aren’t feeling any of it, a good solid will never go out of style!
