Listen, Your Biggest Style Icon Is Actually Your Grandma

Grandma gave you good genes, and good style. While you might not necessarily want to dress in matching outfits, chances are your grandma gave you some impeccable style tips without even realizing it. Here’s what you can do to take those tidbits and weave them into your own personal style.

Avoid overly trendy styles

In our grandparents’ day, fashion trends turned over at a much slower pace than they do in today’s modern age. Today, it seems like by the time you finally get in on the latest trend, it’s already on to the next one. Try to maintain a wardrobe of classic pieces and beautiful basics. You’ll save money and also never be worried about being “in style” because these timeless pieces will never go out. Read more about our must-have classic style pieces here.

Go for quality, not quantity

This ties in nicely with the point above. While it might be tempting to hit the big-box stores for some cheap trendy pieces, it’s better in the long run to invest in style staples made of high-quality materials. Yes, it will cost you more upfront, but it will actually save you money in the long run. Focus on high-quality linen, organic cotton, silk, etc.

Have a style for every occasion

We have a tendency to pick what we like and to wear it no matter what the event. Well, grandma used the term “Sunday Best” for a reason. There was thought and intention put into what they would wear to school, to work, to parties and so on. Having several outfits that make you feel beautiful that you save for only very special occasions can be a real treat.

Finish the look from head to toe

Would grandma be caught dead with a chipped manicure? Or a shiny forehead? To our grandmothers, a look isn’t fully “complete” until you’ve made sure every element is in its place. This includes jewelry. A simple pair of earrings and an understated necklace will instantly add polish to your look. Don’t forget to swipe on some lipstick and a spritz of perfume before walking out the door.

Always bring a sweater

Yes, it was annoying when we were kids. Was she right? Absolutely.
