Tonya Smith’s Portland Home Is Full Of Vintage Vibes

Fashion blogger, Tonya Smith of The Moptop, just moved into a dreamy new apartment in Southeast Portland and we’re so excited to feature it in this post today. Her apartment is inside a 1920s building, and the inside of her space has just as much vintage charm as the building itself. One look at the photographs below and you’ll understand why she plans to stay there awhile. So sit back, relax and enjoy this fabulous home tour.

You just moved into a new place! Tell us about it.

We absolutely love it! It’s an apartment in a great location in Southeast Portland within walking distance to so many great stores, coffee shops and restaurants. The building was built in the ’20s and it has so much vintage charm, which is what made me fall in love with it. And I have a space to have my own office at home, which has been so nice. I think we plan on staying here for awhile.

For those who may not know, tell us a little bit about what you do.

I am a personal fashion blogger! I launched my blog, The Moptop, back in 2011 and started sharing my personal style and outfit inspiration. I started to get really good feedback when it came to my own personal style, so I decided to share more of that. After awhile it just started to grow and here we are now!

What’s your favorite thing about living in the PNW?

I love the beautiful trees! The nature is like no other and I love that you can be in a big city and just a short drive away and you’re surrounded by trees and trails. But if you’re wanting some desert landscapes, Oregon and Washington have drier areas as well, so it’s really just best of both worlds!

How would you describe your décor style?

Definitely vintage-inspired but in a modern way. I love getting mid-century modern furniture (vintage or new) and mixing that with vintage pieces I find here and there. I also LOVE plants, cacti in particular, so I love incorporating those into my space as well.

You have a lot of great vintage treasures. Any tips for finding those kinds of gems?

I think just always being on the lookout and being consistent! I really wanted to find a vintage desk and I would check Craigslist listings almost every day until I found my dream desk. It just takes patience and eventually you will find those vintage pieces that were worth the search.

Where are some of your favorite places to shop online?

When it comes to furniture and home décor, I’ve found some great pieces on All Modern. It has great pieces that are more affordable, which is important for someone with student loans! Etsy is another place I love to browse and see if anything catches my eye. I’ve also found some great pieces on Craigslist, but my dream places to shop would be France & Son and Pop & Scott.

Is there any particular piece of furniture or décor that holds a special meaning?

I think my vintage desk really means a lot to me. It was a piece I had been dreaming of for awhile and I kept searching online to find something similar. I ended up finding it on Craigslist and drove all the way to Seattle to buy it. It just signifies all of the hard work it took to get to where I am today and be able to work from home at my desk. It makes me look forward to work even more!

Tell us about your inspiration for the name of your brand, The Moptop.

When I started my blog, I had a hard time deciding on a name that I liked. I had just recently gotten bangs for the first time and the name “The Moptop” came to me! It felt fitting with my new hair cut and my love for The Beatles!

Speaking of hair, do you have any current favorite hair products you’re loving?

It’s funny, I get a lot of questions about my hair but I don’t really have any products that I swear by! But I guess there are two that I have been really loving lately. The first one is Davines OI All in One Milk. I use it when I get out of the shower and it just helps with tangles and leaves my hair feeling really soft. I also really love the Living Proof Humidity Shield right now! There is a lot of moisture in the air in Portland right now and my hair tends to get really frizzy, so this has been essential lately!

What’s currently on your nightstand?

My nightstand is my favorite! I love decorating it and making it look nice because it’s one of the first things I see before I go to bed and when I wake up. Currently, I have a cactus (of course), some gold jewelry, my two favorite perfumes: Le Labo Thé Noir 29 and Litoralle Aromatica Luce Del Sole, my Mitzi Light, Lavido Skin Balm, Smith’s Rosebud Salve and probably a mug with coffee in it.

Top 3 favorite bands?

This is the hardest question! The Beatles of course. Washed Out and Bane’s World.

Favorite quote?

Nothing is coming to mind but I just always remember my dad telling me to live my life the way I want to live it. Not for anyone else.
