9 Home Items You Should Own By 30

I’ve been spending a lot of time the past few months investing in new furniture and décor for my house. All this redecorating has me thinking back to my glory days as a broke 19-year-old college student…and then a broke 22-year-old grad student. My houses/apartments were a mix of hand-me-downs, IKEA, you name it. But you gotta do what you gotta do when you’re young, wild and free, right? Now that I’m an “adult” in my 30s, there are a few quality home items I’ve grown to appreciate. If you’re nearing 30 (welcome!), these are the 9 home items you should start shopping for.

1. Matching dishware and glassware

I get it, you accumulate a random collection of plates and cups during your 20s. But eventually you’re going to want to have a few friends over for a dinner party, or even host Thanksgiving. You don’t have to get rid of your favorite novelty plates, just make sure you have at least one matching set to host a few of your favorite people.

2. Headboard

Nothing pulls a room together more than a beautifully made bed. Hopefully by now you’ve upgraded from a mattress on the floor (been there), but if you don’t have a bed frame, that’s your first place to start. If you don’t have a bed frame with a headboard, that’s the next step. Nothing screams “adult” more than a headboard. If you don’t want to invest in a whole new bed frame, you can upgrade your current frame with a detachable headboard and pull the full look together.

3. A good mattress

When I met my husband, he was sleeping on two twin boxsprings pushed together and his grandfather’s 40-year-old king mattress on top. Thanks to innovative companies, mattresses no longer have to cost as much as a used car. We have a foam mattress from Layla that we love and I know Taylor is obsessed with hers from Allswell. You can get a super high-quality mattress for a steal, so it’s time to upgrade.

4. A quality knife set

Trust me when I say, this is a game changer. I already am not a huge fan of cooking, but trying to prep with dull knives is the worst. A high-quality knife set can be pricey, but it’s one of those things you should only need to buy once.

5. Matching towels

This is up there with having matching tableware. Not only does having matching towels quickly freshen up the look of your bathroom, it also shows any guests (hey mom!) that you care about hosting and providing a clean environment for your guests. Pro tip: Have two sets, and always wash your towels weekly!

6. Seasonal bedding

I can’t tell you how many years I had the same bedding in a bag set and just kicked off the duvet cover in warmer seasons. Getting seasonal bedding is such a game changer and really helps improve your sleep. One of my favorite “adult” things I’ve ever owned is my linen summer cover from Rough Linen. Find a brand or style of bedding you love (I’m a die-hard linen girl) and stock up on seasonal essentials.

7. A tool kit

I’ll thank my dad for this one. Having a full toolkit is a must, whether you own a home or not. You can get some pre-built kits for really cheap and keep them in the garage until you need them.

8. A piece of art

Everyone should own at least once piece of art they love by the time they are 30. You don’t have to shell out for an original Van Gogh, you can find affordable art online and keep it forever.
